Who We Are
We’re a bunch of sinners saved by grace. We don’t come here because we think we’re perfect. We come because we know we’re not. We got teachers and preachers, retirees and divorcees. People from all walks of life. We love to laugh and sometimes our kids run around during service. But most of all, we love Jesus. We want to know Him better and grow in our Christian walk. And we want to help each other grow.
History of First Christian Church Carthage
First Christian Church of Carthage is an independent Christian Church whose foundation is in the Gospel message of Christ and a firm belief in scripture. Membership is based on the expression of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, whose death on the cross paid the price of our sins, repentance from our past and sharing Jesus' death, burial and resurrection through baptism. We desire to carry out a Bible-based life and walk with Jesus. One of the church's main goals is to aid each member in their personal journey of faith. Communion is celebrated every Sunday at First Christian Church and is open to members and visitors alike, to all who wish to remember the Lord's sacrifice for us. The roots of First Christian are in the Restoration Movement which began more than 200 years ago. In this tradition, we find human dogma of little value and seek to have no creed but Christ. We believe that scripture is sufficient as our guide in life and each member is encouraged to study and live the scripture to the best of his or her understanding. We encourage inquisitive minds and welcome lively, friendly discussions as we work together to understand God's Word and His will for our lives. As steel sharpens steel, our sharing and fellowship draw us closer to the Lord and to each other.
First Christian Church is a comparatively small congregation of people whose first desire is to serve God. While small in size, the church is big in heart, compassion and friendliness. The church has existed since 1890 when land located a block north of the present church and parsonage was deeded for that purpose by Hamilton Pollard. The first church structure was completed the following year. The East Texas oil boom increased the town's population and the church's congregation. In 1947 a new Church Sanctuary was needed and the structure that was built to meet that need remains in use today. First Christian Church of Carthage includes a 4,800 sq. ft. Education Building and Fellowship Hall that houses church offices, a kitchen, dining area, parlor and Sunday School classrooms. At the west end of the Fellowship Hall is a fenced children's playground featuring swings, seesaws, a sand box and "tree" house.
First Christian Church is rich in tradition and reaches beyond its walls to bring Jesus Christ to all members of the community. The church participates in joint music services every fifth Sunday with other churches which rotate serving as host. The service is reserved solely for praise through song, either by the congregation or groups and individuals wishing to lift their voices or present instrumental offerings. An annual musical program, Sunday in the Park, is also sponsored. This event, open to all, is a covered dish, Pot-luck picnic style relaxed gathering and a free gospel concert. There is a monthly men's fellowship breakfast sponsored by the pastor, Sisters in Christ ladies’ group. Bible study groups and an abundance of committees that take care of everything from Sunday after church dinners to keeping in touch with members who arc in need of a special extra touch.
The church fellowship hall is available for a variety of uses by church members as well as the community at large and hosts frequent baby showers, receptions and wedding anniversary celebrations. Reaching beyond the local community, First Christian Church financially supports Dallas Christian College in Dallas, the Cookson Hills Children's Home near Silver Springs, Ark., as well as the mission work of Phil McAfee in Brazil and local needs through the Ministerial Fellowship.
First Christian Church prides itself in providing a wholesome, Christian experience with formal Sunday services presented in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
