All scripture is God-breathed, given to us by God, but some verses just seem to pack more of a punch. Throughout 2014 I will be sharing KEY verses, ones that carry essential knowledge to our faith. With each verse I will share the context and some thoughts and application. My hope is that you will not only study the scripture but also commit it to memory. By the end of the year you will have several dozen scriptures at the ready to help you in living your best Christian walk yet.
Our first verse(s): II Timothy 3:16, 17, the verse I referenced at the beginning of this article. “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
II Timothy is Paul’s second letter to his younger protégé, Timothy. Paul is at the end of his ministry and is sharing those things that are near and dear to him. In chapter 3 he is warning Timothy that things will get worse, people will reject sound teaching. However Paul reassures Timothy that his life has been built on a solid foundation, grounded in the Holy Scripture.
Verses 16 & 17 affirm that the Bible isn’t some man’s idea, but God spoke or breathed through his prophets to give us his ideas. That’s not just true of the New Testament, but also of the Old Testament, it is God’s will revealed to us. What we are to take from this verse is the central role the Bible should have in the believer’s life. God’s word teaches us, but also steps on our toes when we need it. God gave it to us to guide us, to equip us to do the job of living the Christian life. It is silly for a Christian to complain about not knowing what God wants for them if they aren’t daily studying the word. Think about how important this verse is in that it affirms the importance of the Bible and how we need to use it to get and keep our lives on track with God.
