Easter celebrates the heart of Christianity, the core message, the gospel. Christ did not come to be a cute baby in a manger, he didn’t teach to be remembered as a theologian or philosopher. He came to die. He said himself that he came to give his life as a ransom. Paul said that he was not ashamed of this message; in fact he gloried in it. In this message God is revealed. Yes God is a God of righteousness. We can’t soft pedal sin, simply shrugging off the consequences of our behaviors, God couldn’t either. God is a God of love. Some scoff at this because they see pain and suffering all around. God answers that with giving us the answer, he himself suffered to bring us reconciliation.
The gospel message is so important and one that we can’t afford to keep to ourselves, or to be ashamed of. Easter is a time for Christians to do some bragging, not about ourselves, our goodness or righteousness. We need to use this time to point not to the renewal of spring or of the earth, but to the spiritual renewal God provided through his son. Now is a time to glory in the cross of Christ, and to celebrate his resurrection and in His we may celebrate our own.
