It is so hard to believe that the date was July 5th, 1984 when Lovis Hollway pulled into the driveway of the parsonage in a big yellow Ryder truck with all our worldly belongings. I do remember how hot and humid it was that day as we unloaded everything (way hot and humid). Jacqueline and I had three preschool children in tow; Paul was just shy of his first birthday. A pastor never knows how long he will minister to a specific church and you would never guess 30 years, but what a wonderful time it has been.
We have done dozens of VBS’s, revivals, camps and singings. I have seen several of you born, baptized you, married you and buried loved ones. It has been a rich and full ministry. In some ways the building looks exactly the same and yet we have also managed to move into the 21st century. I remember the parking lot being constructed our first year here. We have brought in new sound and visual equipment, and renovated the fellowship hall. We dedicated the historical marker and celebrated 50 years in the Sanctuary.
It is easy to look back and speak of accomplishments, but I’m not through yet. I also want to look ahead and ask what is next. Just as in our personal lives, a church is never done growing and changing. We need to always ask ourselves what can we do better, how can we reflect Christ to Carthage? So here’s to further ministry and continued work for the Lord.
But for this moment, thanks for the first 30 years. Don
