The wise men, at some point, came to worship and acknowledge the new king, the Christ child. At that meeting they presented the baby with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And ever since then we have been looking to give and receive the perfect gifts on Christmas. Even as I type this there is a TJ Maxx commercial on promising me just that, to find the perfect gift at one of their stores. But the perfect, the one perfect gift, has already been given. God even beat the wise men to it, for the child himself was the perfect gift. Paul says in Colossians 1:19, 20 that Christ is the fullness of God and through him he reconciled all things to himself, making peace by the blood of the cross.
Through the gift of Christ we have God’s love, peace, joy and hope in Christ. This may not seem like much to a world obsessed with material possessions and these are the very things money can’t buy, yet they are the very things we need the most. To be loved is one of the most important basic humans needs, to have peace in a world of chaos is most valuable. Joy makes us young and hope is priceless at any time. These are the gifts that we need to receive this Christmas and what we need to give to those around us.
