One of the traditional challenges of Christmas is what to buy for everyone on your list, the challenge of finding the right gift with the even greater challenge of finding it as an affordable price. O Henry captured this dilemma and rose above it in his story, “The Gift of the Magi”, the story of the young and poor couple, Jim and Della. Della sells her long beautiful hair to buy a chain for Jim’s watch. Jim sells his watch to buy a comb set for Della’s long hair. O Henry closes with these words:
But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the Magi.
The perfect gift doesn’t come from a store, or even online. It isn’t made possible by a big budget or gold card. The wisest gifts come from the heart and are made possible when we love each other. God set the standard for this with the first Christmas. Out of the depth of his heart he gave us himself.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son. That whosoever believeth in Him might not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
